Fat is the most energy-dense and a key macronutrient for a healthy lifestyle. Our bodies (and especially our brains) need fat for optimal function – fat is required for the maintenance of cell membranes, hormone creation and balance, absorption of fat-soluble micro-nutrients, and other important jobs.
- Avocados – These delicious fruits are packed with nutrients! Not only are they high in monounsaturated fats, but they are also rich in fiber, potassium, and B vitamins. They truly are a superfood. I include half of an avocado in my daily green smoothie1.
- Avocado Oil – High in antioxidants (like its source fruit), avocado oil is a great choice for use on salads. I love mixing it with some lemon juice, salt, and pepper to dress my greens. Yum!
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil – A staple in my kitchen, this is the least processed vergion of olive oil. It is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory qualities. I use it on salads or to drizzle over cooked vegetables.
- Flaxseed Oil – A rich source of omega-3s, specifically alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Just one tablespoon of flaxseed oil can meet and exceed your daily ALA needs. Flaxseed oil can also help you maintain regular bowel movements – a very important quality in my book!
- MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) Oil – This oil is a quick source of ketones for your body. Ketones are a fat-based fuel that your body uses in the absence of carbs and glucose. By providing an efficient energy source for your body, MCT oil can help you feel satiated and manage your cravings. I like to add a tablespoon of MCT oil to my green smoothie1 every morning.
- Hemp Seed Oil – This nutty and delicious oil has a high content of linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid. It contains the ideal 3:1 ratio of Omega-6s to Omega-3s. Hemp seed oil has many anti-inflammatory properties and can improve heart health.
- Walnut Oil – Walnut oil is delicious option to use on salads as an alternative to olive oil. It has anti-inflammatory qualities and it promotes healthy skin.
- Macadamia Nut Oil – This oil is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients. I like to drizzle a little bit of macadamia oil on half an avocado or a fried egg for a tasty, high-in-healthy-fats treat.
- I follow Dr. Gundry’s 3-Day Detox Green Smoothie Recipe for my daily smoothie. I do exclude the stevia or sweetener drops and it is just as delicious. ↩︎
